Programs

The Children’s Institute
of Fashion Arts (theCIFA.org) is a New York City arts education non-profit  organization. Our afterschool and school day programs use fashion as a means to introduce children  (ages 7–13) to low-tech, hands-on activities using fiber and fabric to develop creative expression that  supports student authenticity and self-awareness. We connect nature to the social world and promote the adoption of habits in sustainability through textile education. The CIFA curriculum is holistic and  interdisciplinary, covering topics in textiles, design, stitching, sewing, math, construction and engineering.

Afterschool Programs

We teach afterschool programs in New York City in both public and private schools.

We provide programs that suit the needs of the students and the culture of the school, giving basic skills in hands-on learning, sustainability, and textiles.  Students have a lot of choice in how they approach their work as we guide them towards project completion and independence.

Fashion Arts Workshop:

This periodic month-long program provides materials, instruction, and time for children to design and make a garment according to their own distinct vision.  In the last session, children show their work in a fashion show for friends and families. This program has been generously supported by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council from 2017-2022.
